This is a very familiar verse if you have been part of the church for some time. It is a popular verse for children to memorize in Sunday School or other clubs. Jesus had just told his disciples not to be anxious about anything; that our heavenly Father knows what we have need of and will generously give all. Instead of worrying about our necessities, and the problems of life, Jesus tells us to seek after the kingdom of God. We are to focus on living our lives as our Father would have us live our lives. When we do Jesus promises that we would have everything we would ever need for life.
But, what does it mean to seek after the kingdom of God? As child I thought it meant we should attend church faithfully, read his word, and pray often. These things are good and helps us to understand what his kingdom is all about. But, this only tells us about the kingdom; how to live in the kingdom. The kingdom is not just hearing the word of God but doing the word of God. Seeking after God's kingdom is doing the good that God has called us to do. This includes giving of our resources to help those in need. This includes the giving of our time to work side by side with those who are helping others. This includes proclaiming the good news that Jesus Christ is Lord.
When we being to seek after God's kingdom, doing his righteousness, we will then see that all our needs are taken care of. We will have no need to worry. Just as the psalmist said, "The Lord is my shepherd, I have all that I need!"
